Rumor has it Ford GT beat Ferrari back in 1966. What would be the F errari equivalent today? How would it do against modern Ford GT today?
Before you blow a lid, I think Ferraris are Meh too.
Yes. Name checks out.
Still wanna know if Ford had a one off win in 66 or would it be able to replicate performance today?

I know little about ultra performance cars but on the aesthetic side I will admit that the original GT and the 2nd gen both stir my loins but I honestly don’t have a picture in my head of what the current one looks like.

Back then it was for the overall win. 2016 it was for the class win against Ferrari. So I kind of get what you are saying... there have been a lot of advances since 66. And the LMP cars are faster than the GT cars. I don’t think there would ever be any interest in an overall Ford Le Mans win again.

if it’s better at cheating, not getting caught and winning, isn’t that just regular winning?

Ford won 1966-69
And modern results are really easy to find.

I’ve only been co pilot in a ford GT but it was an experience. I don’t know if I could comfortably drive one though, its an odd seating position. Acceleration is VIOLENT.
I’ve driven two Ferraris (360/612)
I’d happily take either with a slight preference to the GT as I’m under the uneducated guise that it’s probably cheaper/easier to work on.

When the current gen came out, I was pretty impressed but since they’re so rare, you hardly hear about them anymore.

Yeah. Sorry. All the cars look exactly the same just different stickers. Results dont tell me what cars they are supposed to be... and after all... they arent stock cars I am guessing. Just a shell with some alcohol fueled million HP engines.

Before you blow a lid, I think Ferraris are Meh too.
I find it hard to be interested in cars that cost more than my house.
I also have (briefly) driven a 430 on a track (under close scrutiny), and it was good, but not life changing at those speeds.
(Thinking back on the other cars I could have picked for the supercar trackday, I think I would have been more at home in the C7 Vette or the Porsche 911).

Ferrari has the benefit of being completely dedicated to performance cars. They have knowledge to work off of and existing engineering that can be iterated and improved upon. Development of new models is likely very streamlined and cost-effective for them.
Meanwhile, Ford has had to design the GT from the ground up each time due to long gaps between models where technology has completely changed. That’s expensive and takes more time. Ford is a mass-market manufacturer and thus has the money and engineering muse to throw around, it’s just a matter of getting the corporate overlords to commit to it. Imagine how much better the new GT could have been if it wasn’t a skunk-works passion project.
I think Ford CAN do it, but it would mean changing the company’s focus and image and that’s a big ask for such an industry monolith.

As far as being impressed by supercars.... I stopped being impressed by them before age 10. They are unobtanium. Neverseeingthem and airconditionem. Too expensive, too rare and too precious to drive.
Spending millions of dollars on a car is stupid in my opinion. Plane or a yac ht is way more fun at that price

I dunno, they’re interesting to look at and hear, but yeah, I stopped any dreaming about unobtanium long before I was old enough to drive. Especially the more I learned how much they cost to own.
Not “buy,” own. both due to the cost of parts and service and their general fragility.
Something those YouTube “stars” will learn painfully when they realize that being able to afford to buy a Ferrari doesn’t mean you can afford to own one.

I agree in general with your thinking... but I also think Ford has the engineers geared to think how to reuse parts from focus on F150 and econoline and windstar to save money. Ford can do it... but it’s a really stupid waste of money and time

That does look beautiful . I think you’re right though and they sold too few of them to really garner much attention.
The 2nd gen they ended up in dealer showrooms a fair bit. There was dealer in Rolla Missouri - a town of 20k people and they had a Ford GT in their showroom...

It took me far too long to realize the real life of the supercar, I was too impacted by car magazines and shows where they spend the whole time on the track.
Personally, if I were spending millions of dollars, I’d go for a private racetrack and a small fleet of race prepped cheap cars.

Yeah, the cost to own is pretty horrible too. One major scheduled service costing more than I have ever spent on a vehicle? Nah, man.
I do know there is something special about the special edition cars (well, duh), but even the cheapest supercar is well outside of my dreams, and the cheap ones are never as special.

I think the best part of the reveal of the current GT was that Ford kept it under wraps so well. Very little in the way of spy shots or leaks to the auto press. Ford took the cover off the GT at the NAIAS and people went nuts.

The 2nd gen had the looks when it came out, especially staying very true to the OG but apparently they were plagued with problems. Another issues I forgot to mention on the latest gen is that they went with a v6. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’m all for creative ways to do power but a v6.....in a Ford GT, it’s just so hard to get all warm and fuzzy about.

LeM ans 2016 and Ford doe....
They wanted that 50 year anniversary win so bad, they paid a lot of cash to get it. Never seen so many penalties get charged to one team and ignored to another with a whooole bunch of video evidence. Shame.

I was thinking a bunch of newer cars, just because I’d be rich. Civics or 3s or even base Mustangs. And by “race prepped” I mean just install roll cages. Might as well be safe, especially if you invite your idiot friends over to race.
